What is Gemini?
Gemini is Google's personal AI assistant, available in a web app at gemini.google.com and in Android and iOS apps. It covers conversation, writing, research, explanation, coding and image work. And it's a proprietary Google product built on the Gemini family of large language models, not a wrapper around another vendor's model. The product began as Bard, launched as an experiment in March 2023, and Google's consumer page now sells it as "Your personal, proactive and powerful AI Assistant" (August 2026).
What makes it distinct is the Google plumbing around the chat box. Connected Apps can pull relevant context from Gmail, Drive, Calendar and Photos when you enable it, Deep Research can browse hundreds of websites to build a sourced report, and supported planning workflows reach into Google Maps and Google Flights. Under the hood, Google Help names Gemini Flash-Lite as the speed option, Gemini Flash as the balance of speed and reasoning, and Gemini Pro as the more capable model for difficult math, coding, files, images and video. The subscriptions page also markets Gemini 3.1 Pro, Gemini Omni, Veo 3.1, Deep Think and Gemini Spark, with availability varying by plan and country (August 2026).
Around the assistant sits the rest of Google's AI stack. Eligible paid plans add Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and related Workspace products, the model research comes out of Google DeepMind, and the paid tiers are sold as Google AI subscriptions bundled with Google One benefits. Its direct rivals are ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity.
How it works
Open Gemini and choose an input
Use the web app or the Android or iOS app. A Google Account gets you the free plan, and some limited features may work without signing in. You can type, speak through the microphone, or attach text, images, files and photos; supported mobile workflows also take camera and on-screen context.
Prompt the assistant
Ask for writing, brainstorming, explanations, coding, planning, summaries or research. With Connected Apps enabled, Gemini can bring in relevant Gmail, Drive, Calendar or Photos data, subject to your account, region, plan and privacy settings.
Review and iterate
Gemini answers, and you continue the chat, ask for revisions, or hand the question to Deep Research for a multi-source report. How much you can run depends on your plan, the model, the feature and prompt complexity, with limits that refresh every five hours until a weekly cap.
Put the result to work
Copy or export the output and, where supported, carry on inside Google Maps, Flights, Gmail, Drive, Docs or mobile assistant actions. Temporary Chat is there for threads you want kept out of your activity, at the cost of Gems, personalization and some Connected Apps features.

An agentic research mode that browses hundreds of websites for a single report and, when you permit it, searches your own Gmail, Drive and Chat as sources. It's the feature that turns Gemini from a single-turn chat into a research workflow.
Connected Apps
Pulls relevant context from Google services into a conversation, so a prompt can lean on your inbox or your files instead of pasted text. Availability depends on account type, region, plan and privacy settings, and some connections require Keep Activity to be on.
Gems
Custom, specialized versions of Gemini with saved instructions for repeat tasks, so a recurring job doesn't start from a blank prompt each time. Gems are unavailable inside Temporary Chat.
Multimodal input
Prompts can combine text, voice, photos, camera content and files. On supported Android devices this extends to "Hey Google" voice activation and screen context.
Image generation
Generating images inside Gemini is a documented feature in Google's mobile help. Images also work as inputs, so you can hand Gemini a picture to discuss and analyze rather than only asking it to produce one.
Trip and local planning

Temporary Chat

The app-store ratings are strong, and measure the wrong thing for research. Google Play showed roughly 4.6 stars across 41.77 million reviews and more than a billion downloads in an August 18, 2026 third-party capture, and the US App Store showed 4.7 out of 5 from about 2.2 million ratings in June 2026. Those numbers measure satisfaction with the app, not the factual quality of its answers, and we found no dependable current G2, Capterra or Trustpilot sample for the consumer product.
Google itself tells you not to trust it blindly. Google's overview warns that Gemini can produce confident inaccuracies, particularly on complex or factual questions. So treat polished answers, citations and Deep Research reports as drafts to verify rather than verified research.
Privacy is the serious fine print. Trained service providers review a subset of chats, reviewed chats can be retained for up to three years, and with Keep Activity on your activity, including summaries and excerpts from connected services, can be used to improve Google's services and train its models (Google's privacy documentation, August 2026). Google's own advice for sensitive material is to turn Keep Activity off or use Temporary Chat, which keeps chats for 72 hours for response and safety purposes. Consumer and Workspace terms differ, so don't read consumer privacy behavior across to enterprise plans.
A copyright class action is pending. A group including Hachette, Cengage, Elsevier, author Scott Turow and S.C.R.I.B.E. filed a US class action in 2026 alleging Google trained Gemini on copyrighted works without authorization and altered or removed copyright information. The case was pending as of TechCrunch's July 14, 2026 report, and Google had not immediately commented to TechCrunch. No Gemini-specific data breach or regulatory enforcement action was confirmed in our research.
The names keep changing. Bard became Gemini, and Gemini Advanced is being retired in favor of Google AI Pro. The model lineup spans Gemini Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro in the help pages while the subscriptions page markets Gemini 3.1 Pro, Gemini Omni, Veo 3.1, Deep Think and Gemini Spark, with availability varying by plan and country (August 2026). Older reviews and comparisons may describe plans and models that no longer exist under those names.
The growth numbers are Google's own. The 750 million monthly active users and the more than eight million paid Gemini Enterprise seats four months after launch are both self-reported figures from Alphabet's February 2026 earnings communications. Alphabet does not break out Gemini revenue or profitability in its financial reporting.
