- The biggest caveat is the subscription. Reviewers on Trustpilot describe annual auto-renewals they didn't expect, refund refusals and slow email support, and Pixlr's written policy is that a processed subscription payment is not refundable. Its licence also grants Pixlr a perpetual, sublicensable right over what you feed into and get out of its AI tools, and its own pages disagree about whether purchased credit packs expire.
What is Pixlr?
Pixlr is a browser-based photo editing and design suite operated by Pixlr Group, the company behind pixlr.com. It started in 2008 as a web photo editor built by the Swedish developer Ola Sevandersson, passed through Autodesk, and was bought by the Inmagine/123RF group in 2016 according to Malaysian press coverage. Around 2019 it split into Pixlr X, Pixlr E and Pixlr M and began positioning itself as a suite rather than a single editor. As of August 2026 the homepage describes a free AI-powered photo editor and lists Pixlr X, Pixlr E, Express, Photomash Studio, Remove BG and a Batch Editor as the main tools.
What makes it distinct is the split between two editors that share one account. Pixlr X is the quick one, with templates and a small set of controls for people who don't want to learn a layer panel. Pixlr E is the advanced one, with layers and the deeper tool set that photographers and designers expect from a desktop editor. Both open in a tab without an install, and you can use either free with ads. The AI layer sits on top: prompt-to-image generation with a reference image and up to eight results per request, background removal, Smart Resize for adapting an asset to new dimensions, enhancement and one-click studio compositions in Photomash Studio. Pixlr's generation runs on third-party models. Its generator page says the models come from Google, Black Forest Labs, ByteDance and Stability AI, so output quality, queues and content rules follow those providers.
Around the editors sit a template library for social, business and print formats, a batch tool for catalogue work, animation on the higher plans, and PixlrSDK, an iframe-based JavaScript kit that lets a third-party web app open the editor, edit an image and receive the saved result. Paid plans remove ads, add unlimited saves, and meter AI use through monthly credits.

Choose where to start
Open pixlr.com and pick a blank canvas, a photo, a video, a template, or one of the editors directly: Pixlr X for design, Pixlr E for editing, or Express for the quickest jobs. You don't need a plan to start. Free use is ad-supported and carries feature and credit limits.
Bring in an image or write a prompt
Upload, drag and drop, or paste an image into the editor. For generation, open the AI Image Generator, type a prompt, pick a style and optionally attach a reference image. The generator returns up to eight images from one request. New users get a small credit allowance to try it, and the generator page advertises a 250-credit trial.
Edit or generate
In Pixlr X, work from templates and simple controls. In Pixlr E, use layers and the full tool set. Apply Remove BG, Smart Resize, enhancement, filters and text, run Photomash Studio for a studio-style composition, or send a folder of images through the Batch Editor. Each AI action spends credits at a rate that depends on the model or operation.
Save and export
Save to the cloud with a Pixlr account and export the finished image or design. Plus and above remove the save limit. Premium adds private AI generations, and Ultra MAX adds priority queueing and extended high-resolution exports. Our research did not confirm exact export formats or size caps by plan.

Pixlr X
The simpler of the two editors, built for non-specialists who need a social post, a banner or a quick retouch. It leans on templates and a reduced control set so you can finish the job without learning an editing model.
Pixlr E
The advanced browser editor with layers and deeper tool controls. It's the part of the suite that photographers and graphic designers reach for, and the closest thing Pixlr has to a desktop editor in a tab.
AI Image Generator
Prompt-to-image generation with selectable styles, a reference image input and up to eight results per request. The models behind it come from Google, Black Forest Labs, ByteDance and Stability AI. Plus allows one concurrent generation, Premium four and Ultra MAX eight. Premium and above unlock the full set of image, video and audio models.
Remove BG and Smart Resize
Remove BG strips a background in a few clicks. Smart Resize adapts a finished creative to new dimensions inside the suite, which is the tool for turning one asset into a set of platform sizes.
Batch Editor
Applies the same edits to a set of images in one pass. It's for catalogue and product work where the same crop, resize or background treatment has to land on a whole set of files.
Photomash Studio
A one-click composition workflow that turns an uploaded photo into a studio-style result. It sits alongside the editors as a shortcut for product and portrait shots that don't need manual editing.
Templates and animation
A library of ready-made designs for social, business and other formats. Premium and above expand the fonts, templates, elements and animations on offer, and the pricing page says those tiers also reach video and audio models. Our research did not turn up model names or export behaviour for animation.
PixlrSDK
A JavaScript and iframe SDK that lets a web application open Pixlr, hand it an image, and receive save updates when the user is done. That is what separates Pixlr from consumer-only editors. A developer can put the editor inside their own product.

Everything AI is metered in credits. Subscription credits are topped up each time the subscription renews and unused monthly credits reset rather than roll over. The May 2026 terms say subscription credits expire within the applicable month and that separately purchased credits expire after one year, while the pricing FAQ says credit packs never expire. Pixlr hasn't reconciled those two statements. Credits are not refundable for cash. Free use is ad-supported with limited features, and the generator page advertises both 20 free images for a new user and a 250-credit free trial. We did not confirm the trial's length, or whether it rolls into a paid plan, so check the checkout screen. Premium's $7.99 figure is an annual-billing equivalent, labelled "Save 20%". Ultra MAX's $39.99 is a displayed sale price against a crossed-out $49.99. The $16.99 Team plan with five Premium seats that older listings show was not visible on the August 2026 pricing page, and no Enterprise, SSO or API price list was found. You can cancel from Subscriptions in My Account and keep paid features until the billing period ends, but Pixlr says it cannot refund a subscription once the payment has been processed. Subscriptions bought through a mobile app are managed and refunded by Apple or Google, not Pixlr. Fees are in USD and exclude taxes.
Traffic & reach
Third-party estimates from our last check, a proxy for adoption rather than an official number. The estimate for June 2026 is about 9.6 million visits, down from roughly 11.9 million in November 2025 and about 5.6 percent below May. The split looks like a long-established free tool. Organic search and direct traffic each bring in a little over 40 percent, and the United States accounts for about a quarter of visits. Pixlr's then-CEO told Malaysian press in June 2024 that the platform had more than 10 million users every month. That's a company claim, and the visit estimate hasn't been independently verified either.

What people rate it for. Ease of entry and breadth. The free tier, the X and E split and the templates are the reasons reviewers give for recommending it, and the SDK is the reason developers do. ToolPilot scored it 4.1/5 in February 2026 for breadth and value in lightweight design. An August 2026 review aggregation reported Google Play at 4.1/5 from about 1.22 million reviews, the App Store at 4.4/5 from about 5,000 and G2 at 4.4/5 from 744. Those counts move, so recheck them.
The billing complaints are a pattern. Trustpilot is the outlier at 1.6/5 from 138 reviews in that same aggregation, with about two-thirds of reviews at one star and most of them reportedly about renewals, refunds and slow support. A June 2025 reviewer wrote, "Be warned if you subscribe. I recommend you cancel right away," after an annual auto-renewal with no refund. Pixlr replied that the renewal information appeared at signup and on invoices. Another reviewer said a cancellation and refund request sent within 24 hours of the charge went unanswered for eleven days. Pixlr's written policy is that processed subscription payments are non-refundable.
AI output, ads and lost work draw the other complaints. One Premium subscriber quoted in the aggregation said, "you wait 5 mins and get garbled trash." A March 2026 free-tier reviewer said the browser went fullscreen and played an ad after 15 seconds of editing. Another reported hours of repainting work "wiped and lost." These are anecdotes, not benchmarks, but the lost-work reports describe browser-cache edits rather than cloud-saved projects, so save to your account early.
Read the licence before uploading client work. Pixlr's License and Services Agreement grants the company a non-exclusive, sublicensable, worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free and irrevocable right over AI inputs and outputs, while allowing you personal and commercial use of what you generate. The pages we read contain no plain statement about whether your content trains models. That's not evidence of misuse, but confidential or third-party material deserves a legal read first. No data breach, regulator action or major lawsuit was found.
The company numbers are estimates and claims. Pixlr Group is private and no venture rounds were found. LinkedIn's profile lists 49 employees and about $3 million in annual revenue, and another directory puts headcount at 51 to 100. None of that is audited. The 10-million-monthly-users figure comes from a 2024 press interview with the CEO at the time. We did not confirm the legal entity, jurisdiction or current executive roster from filings.
